Prepping can feel overwhelming—especially when you see people with bunkers, solar setups, and bug-out vehicles worth more than your house. But here’s the truth no one’s telling you: you don’t need a fortune to start preparing. You need consistency, creativity, and about five bucks a week.

That’s why one of my favourite habits is doing what I call the $5 prep. Every week, I set aside just five dollars (sometimes less) and pick up one small item that could make a big difference down the track.

It’s simple. It’s budget-friendly. And over time? It seriously adds up.

Smart $5 Prep Ideas

Not sure where to start? Here are some powerful low-cost additions to your stash:

  • A packet of heirloom seeds – Grow food, save seeds, repeat.
  • A can of butane or solid fuel tablets – Fuel = fire = survival.
  • A basic first aid item – Think bandages, antiseptic wipes, or pain relief meds.
  • A bartering item – Chocolate, hygiene products, small bottles of alcohol, or lighters.
  • A printed map of your local area – GPS may not work when you need it most.
  • A second-hand torch or crank radio – Check op shops or garage sales!
  • Water purification tablets or bleach drops – Clean water is non-negotiable.

Keep a running list of items you need or want to duplicate in your preps, and chip away at it slowly. One $5 win at a time.

Why It Works

This isn’t just about building a supply stash. The real magic is that it builds a prepping mindset—one of steady, deliberate action. Instead of panic-buying before a storm or feeling paralysed by how “behind” you are, you’re calmly moving forward each week.

And it becomes part of your rhythm. You start noticing sales, spotting bargains, and thinking ahead. You’re training your brain to look through a preparedness lens—and that is far more valuable than a one-time shopping spree.

It’s Not About the Money

Sure, five dollars isn’t much. But that’s the point. Prepping doesn’t have to break the bank. It just has to be intentional.

So here’s your challenge: What’s your $5 prep this week? Share your finds, your ideas, and your creativity with the community—because together, we can build serious resilience one small step at a time.
