TESTED AGAINST ONE QUESTION

Five things I'd actually trust. Not five hundred.

Everything on this page passed the same test: would I rely on it in a real emergency, with my own family? If the answer wasn't yes, it isn't here. No gimmicks, no survival toys, no padding the list for clicks.

The only test

Would I trust this in a real emergency, with my own family? Everything else is marketing.

Nothing untested

If it's still in testing, it says so. Long-term food storage isn't on this page yet for that reason.

Commission never decides

Some links earn a commission. None of them bought a place on the list.

Kit one

The survival library

Your backup when the internet is gone. Four books, each covering a different shelf, not four versions of the same one.

  • SAS Survival Handbook Best for the Hunter General skills

    SAS Survival Handbook

The one book to own if you only own one. Lofty Wiseman covers shelter, navigation, water, first aid and self-defence in enough depth that you can actually do the thing, not just recognise the word.

    • Covers land and sea, city and bush
    • Pocket edition fits a bug-out bag
    • The reference the others assume you already have
    Sue's note

Read the first-aid chapter twice. It's the part most people skip and the part you'll need first.

  • NO GRID Survival Projects Best for the Homesteader Build & off-grid

    NO GRID Survival Projects

70 build-it-yourself projects for a house without power, rainwater harvesting, water purification, solar, food preservation. 302 colour pages of step-by-step, materials lists included.

    • Projects you can start this weekend
    • Water and power systems, not theory
    • Written by a veteran and self-taught builder
    Sue's note

Do the rainwater project first even if you're on town water. It's the cheapest one and it teaches you the rest.

  • The Complete Book of Vegetables, Herbs and Fruit Best for the Gatherer Growing & food

The Complete Book of Vegetables, Herbs and Fruit

Three best-selling gardening books in one, growing, harvesting and cooking, plus companion planting, pests and medicinal uses. The book you reach for when the shops are the problem.

    • Herbs that grow in the smallest space
    • Cultivation through to the kitchen
    • Medicinal and cosmetic uses too
    Sue's note

Australian seasons run opposite to the text in places. Note your own planting dates in the margins the first year.

  • The Gentlewoman's Guide to Calm in a Natural Disaster Best for the Tactician Planning & systems

The Gentlewoman's Guide to Calm in a Natural Disaster

A step-by-step system for floods, storms and blackouts, what to store, how to store it so it survives the event, and how to communicate when the phones go. Written for ordinary households, not survivalists.

    • Speaks directly to women living alone
    • Covers before, during and after
    • Systems and foresight, not strength
    Sue's note

The closest thing in print to how I'd talk you through it. If fear-based prepping puts you off, start here.

Kit two

Cooking without power

The gap most people find on day two of a blackout: plenty of food, no way to heat it.

  • EZ Rocket Stove Best for the Hunter Bug-out & blackout

    EZ Rocket Stove

A flat-pack steel stove that burns twigs instead of gas bottles. Three kilos, Australian-made, and it slides down the back of a bug-out bag or lives in the caravan without taking a shelf.

    • Flat-packs, so it stores where a camp stove won't
    • Runs on scavenged fuel, no canister to run out of
    • 3kg Australian steel, not aluminium that warps
    Sue's note

Practise on it before you need it. Cooking on a rocket stove is a skill, not a switch, give it one Sunday in the backyard and you'll be fine.

Long-term food storage

I won't recommend a food system I haven't lived off. I'm working through freeze-dried ranges, bucket kits and home canning at the moment, and I'll publish the results, including what I'd skip, when I'm finished.

Why this list is short

I'm not trying to get you to buy more.

I spent 31 years turning up to emergencies. I've seen what happens when someone's prepared, and what happens when the thing they bought doesn't work the way the box promised. You don't get a second chance to find that out.

So there's one standard here: would I trust this in a real emergency, with my own family? If not, it doesn't make the page, however good the commission.

Confidence doesn't come from owning more. It comes from knowing the few things you own will work.
