When emergencies strike, your furry family members rely on you 100%. Yet too many prepper plans leave pets out. Whether you're bugging out or hunkering down, you need a pet preparedness plan.
Start with a dedicated mini bug-out bag for each pet. Include:
- A 3-7 day food supply
- Collapsible water/food bowls
- Vaccination records
- Backup leash, harness, and ID tags
- Comfort items (blanket, toy)
- Medications
Pets also get stressed during disasters. Practice evacuating with them now—not during a crisis. Introduce carriers or travel harnesses slowly. Run mock bug-outs. Train them to respond to commands calmly.
Consider their behavioural needs: Does your dog bark constantly? Your cat hide for hours? Managing their anxiety becomes part of your OPSEC.
Bonus prep: microchip your pet and keep digital copies of records in your cloud folder and a USB drive in your kit.
Prepping with pets isn’t cute—it’s essential. They're not extras. They're family.
