I've been leveling up my pet prep game lately, and holy moly, there's more to consider than you might think! First up: pet-specific bug-out bags. We're talking about enough food for at least two weeks (rotate that stuff, people - kibble goes bad!), any medications they need (got copies of those prescriptions?), and comfort items because yes, your pet can totally have anxiety during emergencies too!
Documentation is CRUCIAL! I've got a pet emergency binder that would make a vet's office jealous - vaccination records, medical history, recent photos (including ones of you with your pet to prove ownership), and detailed care instructions. Because if someone else needs to care for your fur baby, they need to know that Fluffy only eats from the blue bowl and Mr. Whiskers needs his anxiety meds at sunset!
Now, let's talk evacuation gear! Got heavy-duty carriers for each pet (strength-tested for when your normally angelic cat turns into a tornado during emergencies), sturdy leashes, and even pet emergency boots because hot pavement or broken glass won't care about your pet's tender paws!
Pro tip: PRACTICE. Like, seriously. Your cat's carrier shouldn't only appear during vet visits (talk about negative associations!). I've been working on getting my pets comfortable with their emergency gear, and let me tell you, watching my cat's carrier-training progress is better than reality TV!
The game-changer for me? Pet first aid training! Because when you can't reach a vet, knowing how to handle pet emergencies becomes priceless. Did you know you can do CPR on pets? Mind. Blown.
Don't forget identification! Updated tags, microchips, and even consider GPS trackers if you can swing it. In a crisis, being able to prove that's your pet or track them down could be crucial!
