Lights Out Drill: Practice Power Outage Prepping

Could you function for 12 hours without electricity? Really think about it. No fridge. No microwave. No phone. That’s why I do a "lights out drill" every few months to test my grid-down readiness.

  • Pick a night when your home, then go completely dark. Use only what’s in your prep kit:
  • Candles, headlamps, glow sticks
  • Crank or solar flashlights
  • Off-grid ways to cook, heat, and entertain

Take notes on what’s missing. Did you have enough lighting in each room? Was your first aid kit accessible? Could you prep a full dinner with what you had?

Bonus tip: keep a flashlight next to every bed and a glow stick taped to your main breaker panel. Little hacks = big peace of mind.

Practicing now, when the stakes are low, gives you confidence for when the grid really goes down.
